Picture of the Gridstyle Games at the Mash Spectacular
We're in exciting times for amateur sports. I think it's the apex of a few crazes all culminating at the same time. When you look at Spartan Races and CrossFit Open pushing large amount of people to participate over a season, it brings out the athlete in all of us. And although CrossFit preaches about community and supporting each member I think it all has awoken a need for competition back in the lives of the 20 or 30 something year old athlete. I really believe looking at the last generations what what has been the model? Go to school, graduate, get married, spawn children and settle down. I think with all these weekend events and community of being active throughout your life has shown people want a reason to continue to push towards goals. A bigger purpose. The Amateur Grid is going to be another outlet for that. And I think it takes the best of what functional fitness competitions up to this point have been offering and adds a bunch of needed changes.
Some points to consider-
Structured Time Domain- Grid matches only last about 2 hours. Judging and assembling CrossFit and functional fitness competitions they're a FULL DAY investment. 2 hours it gives structure and a sense of calm for the organizers.
Bringing out Strengths- Yes it is fun to see times too specialized in comps and they fall apart in one WOD because a member of the team can't perform a movement. In Grid you're building a team to handle each quadrant and movement. It's fun to be the specialist, not singled out as the weak link.
Team Work Enhanced- Instead of just getting a partner for a WOD or events, for Grid your building a team. And like other team sports you build for needs of position
